In a press conference that made his discontent abundantly clear, Thomas Tuchel, the head coach of Bayern Munich, voiced his opinion regarding the German National Team’s decision to face Mexico in the upcoming FIFA international window in the United States. Tuchel, known for his direct and unfiltered approach, didn’t hold back his thoughts and expressed his disagreement with this choice.
The issue that has sparked Tuchel’s criticism is the rationale behind playing in the United States on the road to Euro 2024, which will take place in Germany. According to him, this decision raises questions about the logic of a transatlantic journey just before a European tournament in their own country.
A Senseless Journey
“I really don’t understand why, before a Euro in Germany, we would have to play in the United States against Mexico. I don’t know if someone could explain it to me clearly so I can comprehend it,” Tuchel declared, wearing a perplexed expression on his face. His words reflected his disbelief in this decision that, from his perspective, seems to lack sense.
Lack of Consultation and Travel Fatigue
Tuchel also took aim at the German football federation executives, pointing out that the opinions of coaches and players were not considered in this choice. He emphasized the exhaustion players experience on long journeys, which could affect their performance in the league and other crucial commitments.
“The players put in a tremendous effort during travels. Now they go, and then they return on Thursday, only to board a plane to Mainz on Friday. Then, on Monday, they travel to Istanbul, only to fly back on Wednesday,” Tuchel commented. According to him, these grueling journeys add an extra burden to an already tight and demanding schedule.
Decision Without Prior Consultation
The Bayern Munich head coach expressed his frustration over the lack of prior consultation before making this decision. According to him, the choice to play in the United States was already made without considering the opinions of those who would carry it out: the players and coaches.
“Perhaps our opinion is known, but it’s not wanted to be heard. Honestly, it’s futile,” Tuchel concluded, making it clear that he disagreed with how this situation was handled.
Bayern Players in the Squad
Despite the controversy surrounding this decision, the call-up for the German National Team for these matches includes five Bayern Munich players: Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sané, Leon Goretzka, Joshua Kimmich, and Thomas Müller. These players will have to face the challenges of a transatlantic journey before returning to their respective clubs.
