In an emotional announcement, Mexican full-back Miguel Layún has confirmed his retirement from professional football after concluding his participation in the Apertura 2023 with Club América. Layún, aged 35, shared this news through a video posted on his Instagram account.
Layún’s career has been exceptional, as he became the only Mexican footballer to play in the three major European leagues. His legacy includes notable stints at renowned clubs in England, Spain, and Italy, in addition to a brilliant career with teams in his home country.
In England, Layún made his mark at Watford, contributing to the team’s promotion to the Premier League during the 2015-2016 season. Subsequently, in Spain, he represented Sevilla and Villarreal in LaLiga, showcasing his quality in every match.
His European adventure began in Italy, where Miguel Layún started his journey with Atalanta in Serie A before moving on to Porto in Portugal, where he achieved domestic titles and excelled in the UEFA Champions League.
