Chivas Says Goodbye to Their Coach

Chivas Guadalajara have parted ways with head coach Gerardo Espinoza, following their elimination from the Clausura 2025 tournament. The club failed to advance even to the Play-In stage, finishing 11th overall.

The announcement was made on Monday, April 21, by sporting director Javier Mier, who accepted full responsibility for the team’s failure. “A sporting director must show up when things go right and especially when they go wrong. Today, I’m here to face that,” said Mier.

Only 9 games, 37% win rate

Espinoza’s tenure lasted just nine games, after replacing Óscar García Junyent in March. During his short spell, Chivas were knocked out of the Concacaf Champions Cup by rivals Club América and posted only two wins, four draws, and three losses.

No direction, no identity

Fans and analysts criticized the lack of consistency and identity under Espinoza. While Mier praised the coach’s professionalism, he admitted that a change was necessary.

Chivas must rebuild — again

This marks yet another shake-up for Chivas, who now begin the search for their fifth head coach in two years. The pressure from fans is mounting as the team struggles to reclaim its historic place in Mexican football.
